Car Wash Closing Checklists

A closing checklist decides how the next morning starts. It covers shutting the equipment down, rinsing and cleaning, securing payment equipment and the building, and writing down anything that needs attention tomorrow.

There are four versions below: a multi-format list for any wash, and versions written for an express tunnel, a flex service wash and a self-serve site. Copy the one that fits, then add your own equipment and lockup steps.

Multi-Format Closing Checklist

End-of-day closeout for the wash line or bays, vac lot, payment points, and support areas so tomorrow starts clean and ready.

Express TunnelFlex ServiceSelf-Serve
  1. Power down vacuums; clear hoses and canisters of trapped debris.

  2. Shut down wash equipment, compressors, and any non-essential electrical loads.

  3. Sweep and mop lobby, breakroom, and backroom floors.

  4. Sanitize detail station counters, towel dispensers, and shared tools.

  5. Reload towel stations; bag dirty towels for next-day laundering.

  6. Empty every trash can on site and insert fresh liners.

  7. Rinse down the core wash area, including tunnel surfaces or self-serve bay walls, tools, and floor grates.

  8. Close all water supply valves and confirm no residual drips.

  9. Inspect entry/exit gates and photo-eye sensors for debris or misalignment.

  10. Secure all doors, roller gates, and chemical storage rooms.

  11. Shut down POS units; clear any error alerts before powering off.

  12. Close down format-specific equipment and customer areas.

Express tunnel: rinse the belt area, clear the pay lanes, and tidy the vacuum lot before lockup.

  13. Close down format-specific equipment and customer areas.

Flex service: close out interior-detail stations, secure customer keys, and reset lobby/check-in materials.

  14. Close down format-specific equipment and customer areas.

Self-serve: rinse each bay, coil hoses neatly, empty meter boxes or secure payment equipment, and verify booms are parked correctly.

  15. Conduct a final perimeter walk to check for safety issues or missed tasks.

  16. Verify all employee timecards are clocked out and submitted.

Express Tunnel Closing Checklist

Closing checklist tailored to express tunnels so the conveyor, pay lanes, and vacuum plaza are reset for the next day.

Express Tunnel
  1. Shut down pay lanes, membership hardware, gate arms, and tunnel-entry controls after the last car.

  2. Rinse the loader, conveyor path, pushers, rails, and belt area to remove grit and soap residue.

  3. Wash down wraps, brushes, arches, manifolds, and dryer housings.

  4. Empty vacuum-lot trash cans, clear hose debris, and stage the plaza for the morning open.

  5. Wipe every pay station screen, card reader, bollard, and lane sign.

  6. Inspect queue lanes and tunnel entrance for trash, puddling, oil, or damaged safety hardware.

  7. Confirm the tunnel bay, chemical room, and maintenance area are locked and secured.

  8. Record any conveyor, photo-eye, chemical-draw, or dryer issues that showed up during the shift.

  9. Reset cones, lane chains, and entrance markers for the next day’s traffic flow plan.

  10. Walk the full tunnel and vacuum plaza one last time before final lockup.

Flex Service Closing Checklist

Closing checklist for flex-service washes covering the tunnel, front counter, detail area, and customer pickup flow.

Flex Service
  1. Close out the cashier station, reconcile drawer totals, and secure receipts, keys, and customer paperwork.

  2. Shut down the tunnel after the last car and rinse the conveyor path, loader, arches, wraps, and dryer area.

  3. Clean and reset the lobby, check-in counter, and customer waiting area for the next morning.

  4. Break down interior-detail carts, replace towels, empty trash, and restock chemicals or dressings used during finishing work.

  5. Inspect the pickup lane and handoff area for trash, cones out of place, or customer items left behind.

  6. Wipe all POS screens, card readers, counter surfaces, pens, and signature devices.

  7. Secure keys, lockboxes, tablets, and any equipment used to manage vehicle flow or handoff.

  8. Empty trash from the lobby, detail stations, tunnel support areas, and employee work zones.

  9. Record any issues with tunnel performance, cashier hardware, detail tools, or customer flow that need follow-up tomorrow.

  10. Do one final walk from lobby to tunnel to pickup area so the entire flex-service path is ready for the next open.

Self-Serve Bay Closing Checklist

Closing checklist for self-serve operations focused on bays, meters, hoses, pumps, and overnight security.

Self-Serve
  1. Take every bay out of service and confirm payment systems stop accepting new sessions at close.

  2. Rinse bay walls, floors, mud pans, and drains so residue does not harden overnight.

  3. Coil hoses neatly, park booms correctly, and hang wands and foam brushes in their proper positions.

  4. Wipe meter faces, selector panels, instruction signs, and payment hardware.

  5. Empty bay trash, vacuum-area trash, and any vending or towel waste bins.

  6. Check pumps, chemical feed, and bay plumbing for drips, freeze risk, or anything that should be addressed before morning.

  7. Secure coin boxes, token equipment, bill acceptors, and any cash-handling devices per site policy.

  8. Restock the vending area and prep supplies for the next day where needed.

  9. Mark any down bay or broken selector clearly so it is not accidentally reopened on the next shift.

  10. Do a final lot walk to confirm bays, vacuums, and lighting are left in a safe overnight condition.

Making a closing checklist work

  • Write down every equipment problem from the shift before the closer leaves, so the opener and the maintenance team see it.
  • Mark anything that is out of service so the next shift does not turn it back on by mistake.
  • In freezing weather, add the steps your site needs to protect pumps, lines and bays overnight.
  • Finish with a walk of the whole site after lockup.
